The Darkness Surrounding the Cross

And it shall come to pass in that day, says the LORD GOD that I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in broad daylight; I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, and baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.  Amos 8:9-10

The prophet Amos wrote these words about 750 years before Christ came and went to the cross. Amos said, “at noon” the “sun will go down” and we read in the gospels that as Jesus was hanging on the cross from the 6th hour to the 9th hour (Matthew 27:45) that there was a darkness “ALL OVER” the land. According to the Roman time of that day the 6th hour would have been our noon.

God’s word is truth. God said there would be darkness when “His only Son” died and it was dark the last 3 hours that Jesus hung on the cross.

Take a moment and read Exodus 10:21-23, do you remember the “Plague of Darkness”? God described the darkness that He was sending upon Egypt as “Darkness which may even be felt.” God used three days of darkness to get Pharaoh’s attention and to reveal what the world is truly like to lost people without the “true light” of God.

Why did it get dark when Jesus was dying on the cross? What was God saying to you and I from His throne as His only Son was dying on a cross? What caused the darkness in the middle of the day and how dark did it get?

Join me this Sunday as we seek some answers to the Darkness Surrounding the Cross.
