Worthy Is the Lamb

So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.

Revelation 5:4

It takes me awhile sometimes to figure some stuff out, and one of the first things that catches my attention in this verse is that John is “weeping much”. I have preached, believed, and said for a long time there is no crying in heaven, but maybe there is. I know this -  that this verse has made me step back and do some more thinking about “God wiping away our tears” in heaven.

In chapter five verse one we are told that God, who is sitting on His throne in heaven, has a scroll in His right hand and it is sealed with seven seals. We know it is very important for several reasons: the number of seals, it being in God’s right hand, and it being in GOD’s HAND.

No one is found worthy except the “Lion of Judah” which turned out to be a slain lamb. Everybody agrees pretty quickly that the Lion/Lamb is Jesus, and that He is worthy to take the scroll, open it, and read it, but nobody agrees on what is inside the scroll.

I am not sure what is in the book/scroll either. To tell you the truth, I started writing this email yesterday but stopped to read some more about the scroll. Here it is 24 hours later and I have come to the conclusion that I still don’t know. Yes, I think the scroll is very important. It had to be to be in God’s hand (control), His right hand (power), and to be sealed with seven seals (perfect and complete). We will not know what the scroll had in it until we get to heaven like John did. Important or more important than the scroll is our SAVIOR, THE LION AND LAMB is Jesus!

I think we also miss the message in this chapter by focusing on the kind of scroll, when I think it is more about the truth that the ONE WORTHY of worship is Jesus, and He is being WORSHIPED!

Do you really believe Jesus is worthy of Worship? Are you worshiping Jesus as if you believe He is Worthy?

Join me this Sunday as we continue our messages in Revelation. This Sunday’s message will be “WORTHY IS THE LAMB” and our text is Revelation 5:1-14.

Come Up Here

Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.

Revelation 4:1

We made it through the seven churches and now we will begin our way through the rest of Revelation. My prayer is that we do not go so slow that it drags out too long and loses people’s attention, but we don’t want to go so fast that we miss out on what God’s word is showing us and teaching us.

How important is worship to you? How important is worship to God? How much time do you spend in “worshiping God”?

There are a couple of things I think we should take notice of as we get into chapter four and then on into the rest of the book. Verse one says John saw “an open door” and he heard a voice saying “come up here”. We have been on earth looking at the churches but from the end of the last verse of chapter three to the first verse in chapter four we will go to heaven.

The rapture of the church takes place, according to many, between the transition from talking about the churches in chapter three to the vision in heaven which starts in chapter four. You will notice though that THE WAY is through “The Open Door” and that door we know is Jesus. I think it should also be said that it is because we are “Called” by “His voice” to come. I still believe in hearing God’s voice. Some may have ignored His voice for so long that they may not recognize it but I believe God like the old hymn says “softly and tenderly” He is calling us home!

The emphasis of Chapter four is God on His throne in Heaven and the worship that is taking place. Heaven is going to be about worship. That is why I wanted to start by getting you to thinking about what you believe about worship today. God create us for worship. God desires that we be worshiping Him today and for sure when we get to heaven we will be worshiping Him. I think it is sad when people have a low priority of worship and think that worship is just something that will be a part of heaven but doesn’t have to be a part of today.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I don’t think that a person who can’t or won’t worship God today will get to be in heaven worshiping Him. I don’t even understand why a person that doesn’t want to worship God today even would think that they would want to worship God then.

When you have a relationship with God I believe there is a desire to worship our God, our Savior the one who died for us and in our place and lives for us so that we can have life, hope, comfort and His peace. When we as people truly realize how much God loves us it seems to me that we should make Him and worshiping Him our number one priority and not slap last place on God because we believe we are saved and going to heaven therefore we can wait till we get to heaven to worship.

That is just not right and a bad theology! I pray that you will join me this coming Sunday as we continue in the Book of Revelation. This week’s text will be Revelation 4:1-11 and this week’s message will be “Come up here”.

Things happening soon!

Lord's Supper

Therefore, whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the LORD.

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the LORD’s body.

These are verses (I Corinthians 11:27 and 29) that in my opinion get miss used and are too often misunderstood. Sadly, thru the years I have observed people uses these as the excuse verses for not observing the LORD’s Supper.

We will talk about what these verses mean more this coming Sunday as we worship by observing the LORD’s Supper together. Let me share a couple of quick thoughts though one is that the Bible says “WE ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD” in Romans 3:23 and that means all of us have already sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. We can’t do anything to be any WORTHIER to observe the LORD’S supper than we can to receive HIS SALVATION! Our salvation is by and thru God’s grace! Until we get to heaven each and every time we observe the LORD’s supper we will be doing it as unworthy people saved only by God’s grace.

Before you read more look at verse 11:29 and read it again and this time see if you can find the missing word. Just before the word judgment there is no “the”. If the word “the” was there it could be talking about “the judgment” but since it is not how we observe or the condition, we may be in when we do may affect God’s discipline. We may be a Christian and we are not going to lose our salvation but God may discipline us for our behavior, attitude or unforgiven sins.

We can take the LORD’s supper in an unworthy manner but the unworthy manner is about our relationship with God and whether we are taking it seriously or haphazardly.

I pray that you will join me this Sunday as observe the LORD’S SUPPER in our morning worship service.

We are just one week away from beginning our Super Summer Sunday Services! We will host the first service Sunday August 7th at 6pm. We will then go to Elmdale the next week and then Eula and then Hamby. I pray you will join us each week for this great time of fellowship and worship with our sister churches.

We will have a called meeting on Sunday, August 7th at 4pm to discuss allowing Sovereign Grace Classical School to use some of our facilities for their school. This is a called meeting just for this item of business.  The school is actually in conversation with a downtown church and this meeting may possibly get canceled if everything works out with this other church location. Please be praying for the school and for their future school needs. For those who may not know our connection to this school is that this is the school our Marc Collier (Mike and Michelle’s) son attends.

We have the ability now to put our newsletter on the website and make it look professional. Our new website is giving us many more options that we did not have in the past. Beginning this month our newsletter will be on the website so make a visit to the website and check it out. We have paid for our yearly permit to “land mail” our newsletter so we are not going to stop mailing them until the permit is up. Most people have the capability of receiving and getting the newsletter via the web so when our permit is up we will switch from mailing them “all” to only mailing the ones that have to be mailed. This will not happen till the end of the year but we want to start the conversation now so we can get a good count of the addresses that DO NOT have internet access.

Prayer needs: Dale Dozier (is in hospice care please pray for Dale and for his family), Paula Davis (is in Hendrick and at this time which is early Friday morning ICU), Glenda Satterwhite and family (death of her brother), Mary Andrews (Nancy Hall’s mother)

Thanks for your prayers! See you in worship and Bible Study!

“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write…” Revelation 3:14

Did you notice anything different? For those who are coming to church this weekend don’t look at the next sentence or two and you can hear it for the first time in the sermon on Sunday.

Try one more time to see it: look at the first verse in the other six churches listed then look again at Rev. 3:14 to see if you pick up on it. Okay, look at 2:1 and 3:14, then look at the other verses naming the churches that are being talked about.

In five of the churches it says to the church “IN” and then names the town but in the case of Ephesus and Laodicea the verse says “OF” Ephesus or “OF” Laodicea. WOW, do you think that was a slip up or did God want to say something about these two churches He didn’t say about the others, and if so what was He saying?

I have titled this series “Welcome to My Church” because I think of “my church” as the place that is actually God’s Church, but a place that I get to be a part of and worship and serve Him. To some, and probably those back in Laodicea and Ephesus, the words “MY Church” meant that it was not God’s church but it is was their church.

There are some things in church that we should take ownership of like our own spiritual relationship with God, our obedience to Him, our commitment to Him, and our sin. But the church is not one of those things of which to take ownership. It is not ours it is HIS.

You might notice as you read Revelation 3:14-22 that this is a church that has NOTHING good said about it. Laodicea is also the church we refer to as “LUKE WARM”. If you ask me these verses are full of sad words.

“I will vomit you out of my mouth”

“you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked”

I don’t know about you but I don’t like lukewarm water. I also don’t want to be “spit out” by God. The thought of being miserable, poor, blind, naked or wretched is not very comforting either.

Please join me as I continue to prepare this message and pray God blesses it as we continue our series this week on the seven churches in Revelation. This week’s message “Welcome to my church, Laodicea” and our text will be Revelation 3:14-22.

Thanks for a great “garage sale”!

Thank you ladies of the Kitchen Ministry Team and everyone who helped for making the garage sale a big success. The garage sale raised over $1200! I know a lot of hard work went in to making it happen. Thanks again to everyone for your hard work and contributions.

August is nearly here!

It is hard to believe that August is almost here. The bad news is that means summer is about over and school is about to begin for another year (maybe not really bad news to all). The good news is with August comes our SUPER SUMMER SUNDAY SERVICES!

We will host the first Sunday evening on August 7th then we will join our sister churches at Elmdale then Eula and then Hamby. Please keep these dates in mind so you can join us in worship and fellowship.

Next Sunday July 31st we will have the LORD’s Supper during our morning worship service.

It is almost committee time!

If you are on a committee I want to remind you that we are about to start having our committee meetings. We need to start working on next year’s budget and next year’s teachers and officers. Please start praying about these matters as we seek the LORD’s direction and guidance.

Prayer needs: Ginger Faircloth and family (death of her brother Bob Johnson), LuJane Corley and family (death of her daughter in law, Janet), Richard Atha (broken foot/ankle), Dale Dozier (congestive heart failure).

See you this weekend in BIBLE STUDY & WORSHIP!

I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it, for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Revelation 3:8

Then Jesus said to them again, most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. John 10:7

Welcome to My Church, Philadelphia will be this week’s message and the next in our series of the seven churches from Revelation. Our text this week will be Revelation 3:7-13

This was a church with only “good things” to be said about it. This was a church being obedient to the opportunities (Open Door) that God was giving them. This was a humble church relying on the strength of God (you have a little strength) and it was a Faithful church (have kept My word and not denied My name).

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I am coming quickly! Are you ready for Jesus to come again?

Join me this Sunday as we continue this series of messages and join me in praying and asking God to bless this message.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, July 31st. We will have the LORD’s supper during our morning worship on this day.
