Super Summer Sunday Service

SUPER SUMMER SUNDAY SERVICES BEGIN THIS SUNDAY!

This Sunday we will host the first of our SSSS with our sister church’s Elmdale, Eula and Hamby! We will have a Hamburger/Hotdog supper at 5pm then we will have our evening service with everyone at 6pm. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Jeffery Steed from the Southern Baptist of Texas Foundation. Dr. Steed is who helped us set up our Endowment Fund from Mrs. Doris Morton’s last contribution from her estate. Her last tithe became a “living tithe” that will continue to give for years to come. Dr. Steed is going to share about this opportunity to our sister church’s, there may be other people out there who are interested in doing the same thing with their estates.

Join us for this exciting time of fellowship and combined worship!

We get a plus in that Dr. Steed will be here all day and will also be brining our morning message as he is going to speak on biblical principles of financial planning and setting your house in order.

**If you are making cookies for the SSSS meal please bring them during the morning service so the ladies can have plenty of time to set up all the tables and decorations.

Sharing Kindness

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

CONGRATULATIONS BECKY MCCLENDON

For those who have not heard or did not see the Facebook posting of the drawing, Becky was the owner of the winning ticket and is now the owner of a new diamond ring, congratulations and enjoy!

I received a card in the mail from one of our families who moved to Ft. Worth a few years ago. Many of you may remember Sarah a single mom who was raising three children (Drew, Abby and Morgan). Sarah is married and is now Sarah Hall, Abby is in Highschool and Morgan is a 6th grader. Sarah sent a picture and address for Drew because he is a young man serving in the US Marines! I have Sarah’s and Drew’s address so if you would like to send them a card let me know and I will get you the address.

I don’t think it is just a coincidence that Sarah sent her card this week. We are getting ready for Mother’s Day and the continuing of our sermon series and guess what the topic is this week. This week we will be talking about “KINDESS”. It just so happens that in her own words Sarah wrote in her note, “the Potosi church family were a haven to us for a few years.” She also said, “I have never forgotten Potosi Baptist their love and wonderful family of people.”

That is what it is all about ministering to people with God’s love thru kindness! It is always a blessing to hear good reports from families that you had the opportunity to help along the way. May this story encourage you to keep on sharing kindness because you never now what the other person may be having to deal with in their life.

Bring your families and join me this Sunday as we are talking about “Sharing Kindness” and as we honor our mom’s.

No evening Service at the church, Sunday evening we will do “Church at Home”, gather your families and or friends and have your own simple, devotion time and prayer focusing on the “Thankfulness of Mothers”.

Prayer Needs: Caleb Sanders (14-year-old grandson of some dear friends from Hawley, he is in hospice and not expected to live much longer here on earth), Matthew (nephew of Fred Martinez)

Ranger Game: We are going to have to make some tough decisions soon. We need to sell 17 more tickets soon! Get your tickets soon or the trip may have to be cancelled.

Final thought: I came across the following quotes this week and they didn’t have the person who said them listed but I thought they were worth sharing.

“One kind word can change someone’s entire day.”

“If you want more kindness in the world put it there.”

As I reflect on my years of ministry and the many kind people I have had the opportunity to work alongside it brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart to remember each of them. What is also interesting as I do this is the first person I think of from each church I have pastored is a dear sweet elderly lady that never spoke above a whisper and always had a smile and act of kindness. Thank You ladies: Mrs. Burleson (Funston), Mrs. Brown (Sylvester), Mrs. Ryan (Hawley), Mrs. Healer (Sweetwater), Mrs. Ross (Hodges) & Mrs. Morton (Potosi) for sharing kindness and being godly examples for others to learn from.

Isn’t that quote a good one: “If you want more kindness in the world, put it there”? Let’s do it!

God's Peace

I will BOTH lie down in peace AND sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

Do you have problems sleeping?

I read an article titled: “Three Reasons why you can’t sleep”.

Reason #1: Too much caffeine

Reason #2: Sleeping disorders: Insomnia, Sleep apnea, Restless leg, Narcolepsy (too much sleeping in daytime which prevents night sleeping) and snoring (my question is does snoring keep the person who is snoring from sleeping or others?)

Reason #3: Stress

David in Psalm 4 is dealing with “stress caused by other’s mouths”! Take a moment and read the whole Psalm. David is dealing with people who are saying ugly things and untruthful things. How do you cope with what others are saying? Do you allow what others say to cause you STRESS? Does that stress in turn keep you from sleeping?

This Sunday we are going to continue our series of “Walk this way” messages about the fruit of the Spirit. This week’s message is going to be “God’s Peace”. I don’t know how well you sleep or how well you deal with stress but this week’s message I pray will help with each of these problems.

PRAYER NEEDS: Remember the McCurley family, Bro. Jim a former pastor of PBC died this past weekend and his funeral was Thursday, April 26th  in Haskell with the burial in Wichita Falls. Praise for Rain,

What’s happening?

Youth Fund Raisers

Diamond Ring Donated by Shea Jewelers is being raffled by our youth to raise money for camp. Tickets are $10 each or 6 tickets for $50

Mexican Pile-On lunch and dessert auction Sunday, April 29th following our morning service. Bring your favorite desserts for the auction and or make a purchase or two or three and help our youth with funds for their Glorieta Youth Summer Camp.

Door to Door!

VBS is just a month away! We need to do some door to door visitation in our neighborhoods to hand out information about VBS. Target dates to get as many as we can to join us in this outreach will be May 6th (Sunday pm), May 9th (Wednesday pm) and May 27th (Sunday pm). Consider being a walker or driver to help us reach as many households as possible with a personal invite to our church and to our VBS!

An Important Need:

We are needing of a nursery worker. I know this is a difficult position to fill so please pray that God will lead the right person to assume this responsibility.

We are needing this person “Yesterday”! Please it is very important that until we can fill this position we need someone “EACH WEEK” to be in the nursery. We do have guests who bring children, and we do have church families who have children and we “MUST” have someone who can be in our nursery or truth be told those who need it will STOP coming.

Final thought: One of Bro. Jim’s sons at his funeral service mentioned this Psalm and this verse made me think about our new sermon series “Walk this Way”. The verse is Psalm 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scornful, but his delight in the law of the LORD, and in His law, he meditates day and night.”

How are you walking? Where do you go for “counsel”? What fruit are you producing?

See You Sunday, thanks for the prayers.

Walk in the Spirit

“I say then, WALK IN THE SPIRIT and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

Do you like to walk? When our kids lived in Henderson, Nevada I enjoyed visiting with them because the whole city is very “Walking friendly”. Every neighbor hood has a walking trail that is paved, neatly kept and well lighted. The trails that circle each neighborhood have connections to trails that circle the city which are connected to trails that take up and around the mountains. Just give me a backpack with water and some snacks and walking I would go!

The walking was good physical exercise and the beauty of God’s creation and seeing God’s handy-work was great for one’s spirit. Along the trail you would meet people of all ages some walking, some running, some riding bikes, some walking dogs, some walking as families and others by themselves. Some seemed to be on a mission as they walked, and others appeared to have no agenda. Some would smile and say hi or ask, how is your day? and others wouldn’t even look your way.

When I think of “walking” the similarities between walking physically and walking spiritually are a lot alike. Not everyone enjoys it and there are lots of different people walking with different goals in mind.

This Sunday we are going to begin a new series of messages that I have titled WALK THIS WAY. In this series we are going to talk about the fruit of the spirit. Our children’s sermons for the past six weeks have been about “Planting Seeds”. We have been talking about the importance of planting of seeds, the soil, the watering and caring for our seeds. Beginning this week, we are going to talk about the next step which is the “fruit produced by the labor of planting seeds”!

It is very important that we all be “seed planters”. Our world is lost, and people need salvation. It is also important that our planted seeds grow and produce fruit!

Our text for this series of messages will be Galatians 5:16-26. As you can tell by the verse this email began with we are told immediately to “walk in the spirit”. Our walk is going to produce either fruits of the spirit or works of the flesh. Our walk is important to what kind of fruit we are going to produce, that is why I have titled this series “Walk this way”.

I pray that you will join me in praying for this week’s message as we begin a new series and I pray that you invite your friends and family to join us each week as we share this series about producing fruit.

This Sunday!

We will have a baptism service in our morning worship!

We will begin a new series of messages!

We will have our fellowship meal and business meeting in the evening service (6pm).

The end of the month (April 29th) our youth will have a dessert auction to raise funds for summer camp.

A diamond ring has been donated to our youth to be given away as a fund raiser. Tickets will go on sale this weekend. $10 a ticket or $50 for six tickets. The Drawing for the winning ticket will be May 6th.

If you would like and can we can always use those who would just like to be a sponsor. This year’s cost for camp is $400 each.

MISSION HIGHLIGHT

Remember we are still gathering things for the Hospitality House. The display area is at the end of the hallway by the entrance. Items needed are bottled water, laundry soap and paper goods.

VBS

For a craft need we are gathering empty, smooth water bottles we have a sample in the office if you would like to see it. “Smart Water” is a brand that sells water in the kind of smooth plastic container that is needed.

Final thought: John 8:28 talks about “Lifting up Jesus” on the cross and John 12:32 talks about lifting Jesus from the grave to heaven and we are told that when Jesus is LIFTED UP He will “draw all peoples to Himself”! Thank You Jesus for dying on the cross and being LIFTED UP!

Join me as we “LIFT HIM UP” in worship @ Potosi Baptist Church!

Thank You for your prayers and support as your pastor! See you Sunday!

Forgive Them

Would you be like Jesus or would you be like the person who was bitten by a rabid dog and the doctor said, “it is too late to do anything, and you are going to die, you should write your last will and testament and prepare for your death”. The person began to write and after a prolonged period the doctor said “wow, that is a long will and testament!”. The person replied, “This is not my will, it is my list of people I am going to bit!”

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. Luke 23:34

Could you forgive: Deven Kelley (killed 25 in Southerland Baptist church), Stephen Paddock (killed 58 in Vegas shooting), Dylan Roof (killed 9 in Church in South Carolina) or Adam Lanea (killed 20 first graders at Sandy Hook Elementary)?

Some of you may be saying to yourself, “I wouldn’t want to be in the situation where I would be put to that kind of test”.

What is the toughest or hardest thing or person you have ever had to forgive? Most of us have probably never had to forgive someone for murdering their family.

As I am writing this I am wandering “how many of you reading this are withholding forgiveness” and “why are you not willing to forgive”?

I am guessing most of the answers to those questions would probably go something like; “Preacher, you just don’t understand how deeply I was hurt.” You are correct on one hand “I do not know how deeply you have been hurt.” But the truth is the person WITHHOLDING FORGIVENESS IS ALWAYS WRONG in withholding forgiveness.

How could Jesus as He was dying such a cruel death at the hands of such evil people make such a “loving Statement”?

OOPs, I need to be careful because that last question may really need to be re-worded. It is easy for Christians sometimes to look at all those who put Jesus on the cross as “evil people” but when Jesus said, “forgive THEM”, ARE WE NOT ALSO PART OF THE THEM?

As we continue our sermon series on “Last Words” this Sunday we will be talking about forgiveness. Our text will be Luke 23:34 and our message will be “FORGVIE THEM”. I pray that you will join me this Sunday as we talk about forgiveness.
