The Creation of Harvest

Thank You LORD for the rain and for the cooler weather!

Fall is here. With Fall comes not only cooler weather but the harvesting of crops. Growing up here in cotton farming country I am always impressed with all the large amounts of cotton that are harvested from the fields they grew in. What begins as a small seed grows into a large plant that yields many cotton bowels.

Thinking about this time of year and the harvesting that will be going on around us has led me to think about spiritually about harvesting season as well. We will begin a new sermon series this Sunday which I have titled “Harvest Time”. We are going to be talking about different aspects of Harvesting beginning this Sunday with “THE CREATION OF HARVEST”.

Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over the creeping thing that creeps on earth.”

In the beginning God created this world, God created all trees, grass, plants, animals, fish, birds and man. God created everything! God made the seeds that reproduce and give us our vegetables and fruits. God told man to be fruitful and multiply. God put man in charge of taking care of “His Creation”. We are God’s “caretakers of God’s creation”.

We will discuss this topic as it connects to God’s Creation of Harvest this coming Sunday, please join me as start this new series.

God's Calling

THE TEXANS are coming!!!!

In concert this Sunday evening @ 6pm!

Bring your family and friends for some good ole gospel music!

Ephesians 4:1 “I therefore, the prisoner of the LORD, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.”

Are you walking in the calling of the LORD? Are you being obedient, and have you said yes to “God’s calling”?

Thank You Hunter for bringing a great message about Change last Sunday! You did very well!

When Hunter and I began this series of messages a few weeks back we had originally planned to let the message that Hunter brought last week be the last in the series. Over the last couple of weeks God has put one more message on my heart to include in this series we have titled “Uncomfortable”. The one more that we are uncomfortable with is “God’s Calling”.

It was refreshing to me to read as I was preparing for this message the testimonies of several in the Bible like Ezekiel in 1:1-3 when he said, “THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME EXPRESSLY TO Ezekiel the priest”, because that is how God’s calling came to me. I was just a nine-year-old boy at RA camp at Brownwood Baptist encampment and we were in a room listening to a missionary speak when it wasn’t the voice of the missionary I heard it was God’s voice loudly and expressly speaking to Keith. It was so loud that I just knew everyone in the room had to hear it as well.

That was God’s call specific call on my life to be a minister. I believe God still calls people into specific ministries. I also believe like some of the other examples in our Bible people today are still making excuses for not being obedient to God’s calling. Moses tried to get out of God’s calling by saying he wasn’t a “speaker”. God said, “I have that taken care of, don’t worry about it.” Jerimiah said, “I am only a youth”, God said “I have that taken care of.”

God may not call you to be a pastor of a church or a missionary in Africa, but He could. If God should call you to a specific ministry would you say yes?

God has called us all to something! He has called us to be “His disciples” and “His witness”.

I pray you will join me this Sunday as we talk about “God’s Calling”. I ask you to join me in praying that those who have not responded in a positive way to God’s calling will say yes, this weekend. I pray those who are ignoring God’s call will open their hearts and listen to what God is saying.

Prayer needs: A few weeks back I shared on a Wednesday evening that a Dyess Chaplain and family needed our prayers because their young son had been taken to Cook’s hospital in series condition with a mass growing on his brain. The young boy Seth Potts lost his battle and is now in heaven, please keep his family in your prayers. Pray for our committees and the work they need to do to prepare for 2019. Pray for our October activities, Car show & Bazaar, Men’s fellowship night, Trunk & Treat.

Have you heard? THE TEXANS are coming! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to hear some great gospel singing!

Watch Your Mouth

Two men who lived in a small village got into a terrible dispute that they could not resolve. So, they decided to talk to the town sage. The first man went to the sage's home and told his version of what happened. When he finished, the sage said, "You're absolutely right." The next night, the second man called on the sage and told his side of the story. The sage responded, "You're absolutely right." Afterward, the sage's wife scolded her husband. "Those men told you two different stories and you told them they were absolutely right. That's impossible -- they can't both be absolutely right." The sage turned to his wife and said, "You're absolutely right."

If it is possible as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18

It is honorable for a man to stop striving, since any fool can start a quarrel. Proverbs 20:3

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Colossians 4:6

Christianity is under attack by many in our world who are “uncomfortable” with our beliefs. Christians are called bigots by some because of our belief that homosexuality is wrong. Christians are called intolerant by some because we believe abortion is wrong. Christians are called extremist because we believe “God hates and judges’ sin”. Christians are called narrow minded because we believe in “One God” and “One way of Salvation thru Jesus Christ”.

How are you treating others? Do you ignore others? Do you tolerate others? Do you respond with unkindness to those who are not kind to you?

As we continue our series of messages on “UNCOMFORTABLE”, this week our topic is Criticism/Conflict. In Matthew 5 as Jesus was giving the sermon on the Mount He said, “leave your offering and go make things right with your brother”. People may not like hearing this but “WHEN WE HAVE A BROKEN RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE WE HAVE A BROKEN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD”. That is why God teaches us to go and make things right with others.

Criticism and conflict each make us uncomfortable, and I believe that often they are connected in that it is the words from the mouth that caused the conflict. Sometimes those words are directed at those who have said things wrongly about us as in the examples above, and sometimes those words are aimed at our brothers and sisters in our church families.

Solomon said, “anybody can start a fight” and that is true, but we need to learn how to “stop” them. I was listening to a message preached by Rick Warren the pastor of Saddleback Church in California on the topic of “conflict” and he said, “the phrase husbands most fear hearing from their wives is (we need to talk)”.

Husbands, wives, church members, neighbors and friends it doesn’t matter we all need to learn one how to control our mouth and two how to resolve conflict.

Paul said, “As much as depends on you”, as Christians we should be leading the way in living peaceably with others. This means if you ask me we should be getting right our speech to others and our measures of conflict management.

I pray you will join me this Sunday as we continue our series on the topic of “Uncomfortable”. This week’s message is “Watch your mouth” and our text is Col. 4:5-6.

Uncomfortable with God's Communion

I Corinthians 11:27: Therefore, whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the LORD.

So far in our new series we have talked about being “Uncomfortable with God’s Charity (love)” and being “Uncomfortable with God’s Commands” this week we are going to talk about being “Uncomfortable with God’s Communion”.

I feel it is sad, but I have known people that have told me that they did not feel worthy to take communion, so they would skip church on the Sunday we had the LORD’s Supper.

If you read verse 22 Paul says “What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in?” Paul was teaching that the LORD’s supper was not a meal and the place to eat a meal for your physical nourishment was at home. If you are trying to use the LORD’s supper as a “meal” you are doing it in an “unworthy manner”.

We will talk more about the issue of sin and the observance of communion this coming Sunday but let me encourage you to read I John 1:9 and think about what it is saying. It is a small word, but it has great meaning in that verse and it is the word “ALL”. God forgives ALL our sin when we confess it to Him!

We are not observing the LORD’s supper to GET HIM TO FORGIVE, Jesus already died for our sins and all we have to do is trust Him and ask for His forgiveness and it will be done, once and for all. Once we have a relationship with Jesus thru faith then each time we have the opportunity to observe communion we are celebrating what Jesus has done for us.

Join me this Sunday as we celebrate communion!

Sunday, 23rd at 6pm, THE TEXANS

We will have CHURCH AT HOME this coming Sunday evening. I suggest that we all use the message of LORD’s Supper from I Cor. 11:23-26 and share more about the importance of observing it to our families and as a family. You may want to read some other important verses like I John 1:9 and Romans 3:23 and 5:8 and 6:23 and talk about God’s forgiveness.

One More Thing:

My first prayer is that we will not have too many folks out for the holiday weekend, but my next thought is a prayer. “LORD, keep everyone safe who is traveling this weekend.” If you are going camping or going to be away this weekend, let me encourage you to “take worship with you”. No matter where you go block off some time either alone or with those you are going to see to Celebrate the Cross and read and share together passages of scripture about Jesus giving His life on the cross for us. If you feel comfortable (that seems odd to say since we are preaching about “being uncomfortable”), get some grape juice and crackers and have a “LORD’s supper” with your family.

Be safe this weekend, be in worship wherever you are.

Uncomfortable with God's Commands

If you love Me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15

Last week we began a new series “UNCOMFORTABLE”, and Hunter did a good job getting us started and presenting “Uncomfortable with God’s Charity”. He talked about John 13 and Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. Jesus loves you and I that much that He is willing to serve even in the lowliest tasks. How much do we love Jesus, and others and what are we willing to do for others?

This week we will continue with our series “UNCOMFORTABLE” and this week’s message will be “Uncomfortable with God’s commands”.

Obedience is important. Obedience speaks to our relationship with Jesus. I think part of the problem why some have issues with obedience is because they are still “immature in their faith”. They haven’t grown up and like children who disobey their parents or authority they disobey God.

Sometimes people may be uncomfortable with God’s commands because they “don’t want to be told what to do”. This sounds like someone who has a problem with allowing God to be sovereign and be LORD of their life. Lot’s of people want Jesus to be savior, so they can go to heaven someday, but they do not want Him or do not allow Him to be LORD TODAY because they don’t want anyone to “Boss them”.

I pray you will join me this week as we continue these messages on our reasons for being Uncomfortable. Pray with me that God will move people out of their comfort zones and into HIS UNCOMFORTABLE ZONES.

Hard to believe we are about to the end of another year of our Super Summer Services. They have been very well attended. I think this year at each one of the services we have had larger crowds than before. Thank You for supporting these services each year! This week’s service will be at HAMBY BAPTIST: meal at 5pm and worship at 6pm.

September 4th Car show meeting 7pm (after this meeting we will begin meeting weekly to take care of all the details.

September 2nd LORD’S SUPPER (am service)

September 16th-19th, “ACBA Senior Adult Revival (We will host the service and meal on Wednesday, Sept. 19th.

September 23, gospel concert by the “Texans”

October 20th Annual Car Show and Women’s Bazar

MISSION EMPHISIS: Operation Christmas Child

We do have more boxes on the way! Our display of boxes is getting low, thank you for picking up lots of boxes and filling them. Hopefully the boxes will be in soon.

Praise: Shelby Borton is home, she is better but still has a long way to go, Brycen, Pat Smith, Darlene Terry (had her ear surgery this week), Praise the LORD for more rain this week, pray for all the students and teachers as they are beginning a new school year,

Final thought:

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

“Thus, I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.”

My goal was 50 miles a week, I reached that last with a total of 54 and so for this week (Monday – Thursday) I have ridden my bike 70 miles. The Bible doesn’t say everyone has to ride bikes or jog or swim or go to the gym, but Paul does talk about exercising his body as a good thing.

My thought in this is not to boast about “what I have done” but to ask and or challenge you: What goals are you setting?

Thanks for the prayers! See you in Worship!
